Role Playing Wargaming

frankxmcgovern, August 9, 2023November 7, 2023

Role playing war gaming, also known as RPG wargaming or narrative wargaming, combines elements of role-playing games (RPGs) and traditional wargames. It is a genre that focuses on both strategic warfare and individual character development within a narrative framework.

In role playing wargames, players not only control military units and engage in battles but also assume the roles of specific characters within the game world. These characters can have unique abilities, skills, and backgrounds, and their actions and decisions can influence the outcome of battles and the overall narrative. RPG elements such as character progression, storytelling, and player choices are integrated into the war game mechanics.

The game play in role-playing wargames often involves a mix of strategic decision-making during battles and exploration, interaction with non-player characters (NPCs), and the development of the player’s character(s) outside of combat. Players may have the opportunity to customize and upgrade their characters, acquire new equipment or abilities, and engage in non-combat activities such as diplomacy or espionage.

Role playing wargames can cover a wide range of settings, including historical, fantasy, sci-fi, or alternate history. They can be played on various platforms, including tabletop, computer, or a combination of both. Some role-playing wargames may focus on individual skirmishes or small-scale conflicts, while others may span entire campaigns or epic wars.

This genre appeals to players who enjoy a combination of tactical decision-making, strategic planning, character development, and immersive storytelling. It offers a unique blend of game play elements that cater to different interests and preferences, allowing players to experience the thrill of both wargaming and role-playing in a single game.
