Solo Wargaming

frankxmcgovern, August 30, 2023August 30, 2023

Solo wargaming is a way for individuals to enjoy wargames and tabletop battles without the need for a human opponent. This can be particularly useful when finding opponents isn’t feasible or when you want to play on your own terms. Here are some approaches and tips for solo wargaming:

Use Solo Rule sets: Some wargame rule sets are designed with solo play in mind. These rule sets often include mechanisms for simulating opponent decisions and actions. Examples include “AI” systems that control the opposing forces’ behavior.

Adapt Existing Rules: You can modify existing wargame rules to work in solo play. Develop a set of guidelines for how the opposing forces will act. This might involve dice rolls to determine actions, priorities, and targets.

Narrative and Scenario Creation: Develop scenarios with specific objectives for both sides. Use narrative elements to drive decision-making for the opposing forces. This way, you’re playing against an AI that follows a storyline.

Randomized Activation: Use a randomized system for activating units. For instance, you can assign a value to each unit and roll dice to determine which unit takes its turn. This adds an element of unpredictability.

Solo AI Tools: Some wargamers have created digital tools or apps that simulate AI opponents. These tools generate decisions for the opposing forces based on algorithms and random factors.

Play Both Sides: You can play both sides, swapping roles after each turn or round. This requires objectivity and strategy adjustment, as you have knowledge of both sides’ plans.

Campaigns and Progression: Create linked scenarios that form a campaign. The outcomes of each scenario affect the next, and you can track progress and results over time.

Record Keeping: Keep detailed records of the game’s progress, decisions made, and outcomes. This can help maintain consistency and fairness throughout the game.

House Rules: Don’t hesitate to create your own house rules or adapt rules for solo play. The goal is to ensure a fun and engaging experience.

Focus on Enjoyment: Solo wargaming allows you to explore strategies, experiment with tactics, and immerse yourself in the storytelling aspect of the game. Embrace the freedom to play at your own pace and explore different approaches.

Remember that the goal of solo wargaming is to have an enjoyable and engaging experience. Feel free to experiment with different approaches until you find a method that works well for you and provides the level of challenge and excitement you’re looking for.
